Lennox Air Handler Issues

What are the issues?

As a home inspector, I often come across Lennox air handler issues. I do not assess performance or efficiency, but I have noticed a design concern in some newer models. The top panel uses open-faced insulation, which tends to trap moisture and dust. This creates an ideal environment for mold to grow. The other panels use foil-faced fiberglass, but only the top panel has this open insulation. The photos below show signs of mold growth. Since this is inside the air handler, it can spread throughout the home, which is a serious concern.

How can we fix this?

I’m not sure why Lennox chose to use this type of insulation on just one panel instead of the whole unit. Other brands like Carrier, Trane, and Goodman use standard foil-faced insulation throughout their cabinets. If you have a Lennox, don’t worry—there are companies that sell insulation sheets you can use to fix your air handler. It’s important to replace the insulation rather than just remove it, since removing it can lead to condensation on the outside of the cabinet. Keeping your HVAC system free from microbial growth is especially important if you’re sensitive to mold.
