Building Code – Wind Mitigation Discount

This is Part 1 of a seven-part series on wind mitigation discounts, focusing on the Building Code section. We will review the wind mitigation form and outline each discount available to homeowners. As homeowners insurance costs have increased significantly in recent years, I recommend this inspection to help clients secure lower rates.

Section 1: Building Code

Section 1 of the wind mitigation form

The first discount applies to changes in the 2001 Florida Building Code. Homes with a permit application date of March 1, 2002 or later qualify. Some homes built in 2002-2003 may not be eligible if the permit was applied for before this date.

What does the building code discount give me?

If your home was built after March 1, 2002, it will automatically qualify for most discounts listed on the form. This includes sections 2 through 4, which cover roof age, roof deck attachment, and roof-to-wall attachments such as hurricane straps. Additional discounts may be available for features like roof shape, secondary water resistance, and hurricane shutters or impact windows. As shown in the photos below from an insurance provider, their documents do not include options for sections 2 through 4.

Do I need an inspection if I have a newer house?

If you have a gable roof, no SWR, and no hurricane shutters, you may not need this inspection. However, some insurance agents still require it. Please confirm with your agent before scheduling the inspection to ensure it is necessary.
