Part 5 of our 7 part series of articles explaining the roof geometry section on the wind mitigation form. Section 5 of the form has to do with the roof shape.
Roof Shape
To keep it simple we will focus on Residential homes for this article. This will take away option “B” which is for Flat Roofs on larger commercial buildings for multi-family. 99.9% of home owners will only need to focus on Option “A” or Option “C” on the form. Option A means that the roof shape on your house is considered a “Hip” roof which gets you a good insurance discount. Option C unfortunately means that your house does not qualify for the discount.
How does a roof qualify for the Hip discount?
The wind mitigation form states that a roof will be counted as a Hip roof if there are no other shapes that are more than 10% of the roofs perimeter. This means that if your roof has a total perimeter of 300 feet then you can only have 29 feet or less of non Hip shape features(gable, flat roof). The photos below show the roof perimeter(blue line) and the non hip features(red lines). Although the majority of the roof has hip features, the two gables at the front put it over the 10% mark allowed on the form.
How big is the discount?
The amount you save really depends on your carrier and the overall cost of your policy. In general though the biggest discounts on the form include Roof Shape, Hurricane straps & how old the roof is. The best advice is to give your insurance agent a call and ask them how much you would save on your current policy with this added.
